The Very Latest Developments

The June 2000 Update!

This month features such varied tournaments as the Bosnia Super-GM, and the Dubai Open, not to mention two wonderful Krasenkow victories from the Polish Championships. I have also had a good look at the Cadaques Tournament, a twenty game set-to between seven of the best computer programs around, dominated by Junior 6.0, ahead of Fritz 6a.

English Opening

1...e5

Was Kasparov right? TK173 casts some doubt on one of his assessments.

Nimzo 7.32 finds a sharp tactic at the end of a known opening in the Reversed Dragon of TK181.

Powerful attacking play from Black in TK182 left the white queen with no choice but to sacrifice herself to save her king.

Miles’ move is given the Fritz seal of approval in TK183.

1...c5

Strange goings-on at the end of TK174, a Botvinnik System from Black.

In the English White often plays g3 in the opening, but the double advance g4 is proving very effective in many positions, too. TK179 is a fine example.

Few Sicilian Najdorfs, or Dragons, could match TK180 in terms of sheer tactical complications.

1...Nf6 & others

In TK175 1...g6 leads to a King’s English without Black playing ...Nc6, after a couple of inaccuracies Black crashed through on the kingside.

Black found a side-step of his own to White’s anti-Grünfeld system in TK177.

Other first moves

The solid 1...e6 was successfully played against 1 b4 in TK176.

As TK178, which starts 1 g3, shows, sometimes systems that seem fine with Black, can look awful when played as White- with a tempo more!

In the main line of 1 b3 e5, 5 f4 and 5 c4 are the two trendy moves, but the 5 Nf3 of TK184 might be worth a look.
