October '99 Update
|
Here`s where to come for a first glimpse of what`s in the latest monthly update. So let`s get cracking with the October round-up, and dip into the topical offerings below. Enjoy these games! Alex Volzhin |
Pirc
4 Bg5 can be a mighty dangerous weapon against the Pirc...
AV79 A strong GM finds an important improvement in the Byrne Variation, doing over a very respectable IM in just 13 moves. So learn this cutting edge stuff or it could happen to you too!
AV80 A very recent game which shows how to play the Byrne Variation; White's play is sharp, positionally sound, and dynamic, and results in a mating attack. Black players need a good antidote to this system.
AV81 and I couldn`t resist featuring this Austrian Attack game as well
Caro-Kann
Bring on the Advance variation! This is where the real Caro action has been this month.
AV75 An important novelty 1999 style in the chaotic piece versus pawns' line of the Advance. The resulting verdict on who is better is not clear yet; this is really cutting edge stuff.
AV76 The same debate continues between two of the world's best. A terrific game; full of different themes and superb twists, this is bloodthirsty chess at its very best.
AV77 A young French GM tries an interesting new idea which objectively appears to lead to a forced draw, but in a practical sense almost a forced win! Suffice to say this line requires thorough examination.
AV78 Finally the current state of play in the Advance Modern Main Line is demonstrated, and it looks good for Black (for this month, at least!) Maybe another new idea will swing the pendulum in White's favour. If so, rest assured you'll see it here first.
Alekhine
AV82 An excellent game from an up and coming Russian and a good example of how to play the main line of the Alekhine as White. Contains a spectacular and very attractive queen sacrifice.
