RS173 The problems for Black in this line have been illustrated in earlier updates. In this game Black tries a well-known and logical alternative: if d4-d5 is played he doesn't pay much attention to it and just continues developing his Q-side. Interesting complications begin when White tries to prove that Baburin's unexpected exchange sacrifice is wrong, but Black finds a narrow and quite unbelievable escape...

RS167 This game was awaited with great interest. Alexander Morozevich had recently successfully revived one of the old lines in the Slav Defence, and the spectators were not to be disappointed here - he came up with a very interesting idea. Unfortunately this was not sufficient to shake Garry Kasparov.

RS169 A couple of days after his defeat against the World Champion, Morozevich faced the same problem against the World No.2. Again he went into his pet variation, but played it differently and this time solved the problem successfully!

RS168 Here Morozevich outplays his opponent but under time pressure fails to convert his advantage to a win.

RS170 In view of White's e3-e4, Black usually has a choice of bishop moves. Here we examine ...Bg4. The Bishop is quite often swapped for the Knight on f3 but here Black tries to increase the pressure with an early ...Qa5-h5 manoeuvre. In this game interesting complications occur after White defends the Knight with the unusual Rd1-d3!?...

RS171 An interesting novelty, but I believe that White should be able to find an improvement. Let's wait and see.

RS172 The line where Black sacrifices a piece for some pawns is very complicated and it is one of Kramnik's favourites. We have already examined a couple of his instructive wins, including the excellent game against Shirov from Dortmund 1996! Here is another one...

RS165 The development of the 9...Bb4 line is continuing. Thanks to the great activity of all his pieces, Black was able to hold the balance here despite being two pawns down.

RS166 A new idea at the very beginning of the whole variation! White is taken by surprise and quickly finds himself in a totally lost position...The total score is 0-2 in Black's favour now so White obviously has some work to do...

RS164 In this popular line White here introduced an interesting idea: while transferring the Knight to f5 he left it on h4 waiting for the Bishop on c8 to move first! However Black's skillful handling here proves that he is still OK with precise play.
