May Update: - What's New

Welcome to my final d-pawn special update. Due to other commitments, I have decided to stop being your guide to the wonderful world of what used to be thought of as irregular d-pawn openings.

However, I have been assured that you will be in capable hands with my successor. I hope you continue to enjoy the openings here and that they continue to bring you many victories.

Trent, L - Tan, D

White has been attacking hard to get to the position above. Now is the time to put the icing on the cake. What would you do?

Brumen, D - Polak, T

White is rewarded for his offbeat approach to the 2...e6 Tromp. Watch out for his nice finish.

Froehlich, P - Edwards, J

Black gets overaggressive in the opening and pays the ultimate price in the following entertaining game.

Bigg, A - James, D

One of the main points behind the h4 tromp is to open the h-file for the White rook. Once achieved White can often look forward to dangerous attacking chances.

Marcos, J - Aoae, J

One feature of the d-pawn specials this month is how aggressive the Black players are getting in the opening. No longer is the second player content to sit back and defend, but such an approach contains a fair amount of risk and therefore a fair amount of entertainment for us.

Stamenkovic, D - Molina, J

White finds a nice way to break though Black's defences on the queenside and is soon reaping the rewards.

Colle-Zukertort [D02 & D04-05]

El Gindy, E - Sargissian, G

This month I highlight what I believe to be one of Black's better defensive formations against the Colle.

Here after an exchange of knights on e5 Black's remaining horse finds an excellent post on c5. Combined with a plan of advancing the d-pawn, this proves to be a very effective strategy, as we shall see.

London System [D00 & A46]

Khechen, N - Goloshchapov, A

Here we can see White being outplayed by his stronger opponent, who insists on mixing things up from an early stage.

Torre Attack [A46 & D03]

Arvind, C - Priyadarshini, M

Black has paid the price for some inconsistent opening play, but the question remains - how best to finish things off?

Sosna, J - Forman, S

Black pays the price for trying to equalise too early. If chess were that simple we would all be doing it!
