October Update: - What's New

This Halloween update turns into a bit of a nightmare for Black, who manages to take only one game. Lots of interesting ideas for the d-pawn specialist this month.

Trompowsky [A45]

Romero Holmes, A - Gulbas, C

In an critical line of the Tromp, White manages to refute overambitious play by Black.

Pseudo-Tromp [D00]

Romero Holmes,A-Del Rio Angelis,S

Black is strategically outmanoeuvred in the solid c6 line.

Torre Attack [A46 & D03]

Dougherty, M - Shepherd, M

When Black keeps his options open in the Torre and refuses to commit himself, then White is well advised to take the battle to his opponent.

Hebden, M - Grant, A

The early h6 systems are nowhere near as effective for Black when White plays the Torre with 3.c3. first. In fact, the position after 6.e4

looks very favourable for White and practice has born this out.

Dzagnidze, N - Zivkovic, V

As so often in the d-pawn specials, Black pays the price for not concentrating his attentions on the centre.

Colle-Zukertort [D02 & D04-05]

Berkell, P - Hellsten, J

This is a typical situation in the Colle when Black refuses to play ...d5. The hedgehog formation that Black erects can be very difficult to break down. Chances are balanced, with the better player often going on to win, but not here!

Beaumont, C - Kishnev, S

This is one of the most important anti-colle systems. White plays directly for the full point and has a dangerous couple of passers on the queenside after only 8 moves! An excellent choice for the tournament player.

London System [D00 & A46]

Alejandro, L - Vasquez, M

This sort of positional mistake is so common I have decided to highlight it here. By taking all the pressure off the White d-pawn, Black gives White too many options of attack.

Diehl, K - Rochol, J

The passive systems where Black is committed to an early e6 continue to be good point scorers for White.

Veresov Attack [D01]

Smirnov, I - Yagupov, I

A typically aggressive Veresov affair with Black giving as good as he gets, until it all goes horribly wrong.
