September '00 Update

This month, I would like to address some of the questions that subscribers have put to me about the various d-pawn Specials. |
Trompowsky
AS186 Tom Clash "Can I suggest an answer to the irregular move 2...c6 against the Tromp." Well, I hope the following game provides some inspiration.
London System
AS187 A high level White win which shows quite a promising way to meet Black systems with an early ...e6. Here Black gets bombarded with nasty tactics.
AS190 The London system continues to be an effective way of meeting the Chigorin with ...Nc6. It is not often that you see a player launch a violent attack on his opponent's king, while half of his own kingside remains undeveloped - smooth positional play followed by a violent attack from a world-class GM.
AS191 Black choses a solid, if unambitious method of meeting the London system and gradually succumbs to White's kingside pressure. Although Black's position is very solid, my feeling is that White is always slightly better in these type of positions, due to his superior light squared bishop.
Barry Attack
AS188 I received a very interesting piece of analysis based on a recommendation of mine in "A killer Chess Opening Repertoire". Black sacrifices a piece to set up a central pawn rollercoaster.
However I think I can show that if White plays his cards right, he has little to fear and good long term chances.
AS189 Good advice in an offbeat variation of the Barry. If Black wants to put his Knight offside on h5, then this should encourage White to go for a quick central break.
Blackmar-Diemer Gambit
AS192 A really wild game where Black sacrifices a piece to take over the initiative. White's not-so-dodgy 9 Ke2! is the answer to a tempting Bishop check in the Vienna Defence.
AS193 h3 is an important little move in the the Bogoljubow defence. Here Black's fate is sealed with a tasty Blackmar-Diemer sacrifice.
AS194 White treats the Hubsch Gambit in the manner of a normal Blackmar-Diemer, arguing that he has already benefited from the removal of Black's kingside Knight, and that's where the majority of the action will occur.
AS195 Declining the Gambit, Black attempts an aggressive way of playing the Langeheinecke Defence, but is soon hit by a disastrous cheapo!
