The Very Latest Developments

The May 2000 Update!

This month's update is a another demonstration of the importance of the Symmetrical English!

English Opening

1...e5

It looked like the black king was in trouble for most of TK168, but at the very end it was a case of the ‘mater being mated’.

A rook can often hold its own against two pieces in the endgame, although it probably shouldn’t have in TK166.

Talking of rooks, we all know the importance of playing actively in rook and pawn endgames, don’t we? See TK170 for a reminder!

1...c5

TK167 shows the importance of preparation in the Bundesliga, where you know your opponent a long time in advance, but just how long had White been keeping his novelty to himself?

TK169 is not a bad example of home preparation, or did Timman find all this at the board?

For once, an older game, one from March that slipped through my net, between the two best players on the planet, TK162.

Making the right decisions in sharp endings can be very difficult, see TK163.

‘The queen shouldn’t be brought out too early in the game’, or should she? TK164 might seem to indicate otherwise!

1...Nf6 & others

In TK172 Black paid heavily for pawn-grabbing in front of his king.

Other first moves

Black demonstrates ruthless attacking play in TK165 .

I very rarely feature games from simuls, in fact TK171 must be the first, but I felt it was time to have another Orang-utan!
