What's New - August 2003

Today I am going to Krasnoyarsk to play in the Russian Championship - I'm a bit worried about my ability to play in such a strong tournament as I play serious chess very rarely!

Main line Slav [D16-D19]

Schenk,A - Gustafsson,J: A small innovation in Morozevich's line with 11...g5!? Black's prophylactic king move does not look too bad and it eventually brought him a nice victory but I feel that in some cases it may turn out to be a waste of time. Let's wait for future encounters.

Queen's Gambit Accepted [D20 to D29]

Onischuk,A - Rublevsky,S: Alexander Onischuk prepared a small innovation in Sergei Rublevsky's pet line. White gets a small advantage in the endgame but objectively Black should not face many problems on the way to scoring half a point - of course, if he plays precisely.

Lautier,J - Rublevsky,S: Joel Lautier has tried a new continuation in the principal line. Yet, Black's position still looks fine and full of resources...

Vera,R - Lesiege,A: In the game Radjabov - Kasparov/Linares 2003 Black introduced an important improvement, which helped him to convincingly solve the opening problems. Here Reynaldo Vera tried a new way to put problems before Black and eventually succeeded, but objectively his idea does not look that promising...

Schenk,A - Cyborowski,L: After the game Borovikov - Rogic/Bled 2000 I supposed that Black should stop playing this tricky line but perhaps it is not the whole truth. White gets a material advantage but then it is still not easy for him to neutralise Black's activity, as he has problems with development as well as with the safety of his king - and very precise play is required. In this game Black introduced a new idea:

but objectively White still should be better. Yet, a computer's help is not allowed during the game and so mistakes are quite possible...

Sulypa,A - Korneev,O: Oleg Korneev introduced a new idea in the principal line. In a complicated struggle he slowly outplayed his opponent but later was in too much of a hurry to begin concrete actions...

Meran Defence [D47-49]

Lugovoi,A - Kallio,H: A rare idea in the deep line helped White to get a small advantage and convert it into the full point thanks to great help from his opponent.

Cambridge Springs [D52]

Khalifman,A - Gurevich,M: Alexander Khalifman draws our attention to this not very popular but fairly interesting approach.

In this position White played 11 a3!?. Yet Mikhail Gurevich seemed to be well prepared and even introduced a good novelty but still found himself under a certain pressure... New problems for Black in this line.
