Hello,
Once again there are lots of games in the Advance Variation of the Caro-Kann, and it seems to me that this line has established itself as a critical challenge for Black. I decided to insert some of the lines into one game so that readers can gain a better view of what's going on in this particularly interesting system.
There are also two sharp games featuring the Austrian attack against the Pirc.

Pirc Defence - Austrian Attack 5...0-0 [B09]

Sutovsky - Ivanchuk World Cup 2011, features the rare and sharp choice 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.e5 Nfd7 7.h4:

but White quickly went wrong.

Steenbekkers - Van der Zalm is another sharp Pirc Austrian attack although this time more common, starting 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Bd3 Na6 7.0-0 c5 8.d5 Bg4:

A very interesting line but I am more inclined to favour White's chances.

Caro-Kann Defence Advance - Short Variation 3...Bf5 4 Nf3 [B12]

Karjakin - So World Cup 2011, started 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5. Be2 c5 6.Be3 cxd4 7.Nxd4 Ne7 8.Nd2:

Inside the main game there are some additional games with 5...Nd7 instead.

Naiditsch - Laznicka Serbian league 2011, started 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5. Be2 c5 6.Be3 Qb6 7.Nc3 Nc6 8.Bb5:

A line I previously analysed in some depth. A highly complicated encounter.

Vachier Lagrave-Bauer is yet another Advanced Caro Kann, this time from the French championship.

Caro-Kann Defence Advance Variation - 3...Bf5 4 Nd2 [B12]

And, finally for this time, the line 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nd2 e6 5.Nb3 c5:

In the game Rublevsky - Laznicka Serbian league 2011, Black managed to make a draw but overall I am not sure that Black can equalize in this particular position.

Till next month, Milos.
