In tournaments I often encounter players with pet systems like 1 e4 e6 2 Nf3 d5 3 e5 c5 4 b4!? or even 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 Be3?! dxe4 4 Nc3 Nf6 5 f3. This second idea was played by one of my pupils, Chris Ross, in a European Junior tournament. He won in about 17 moves, though his trainer banned him from ever playing it again! Maybe I was too harsh? After all, Blackmar-Diemer fanatics are happy to begin their games 1 d4 d5 2 e4 dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3; in the French Defence version we have the extra moves Be3 by White and e6 by Black. Maybe this favours White? Though in any case I would regard it only as an improved version of a dubious opening...
If you have any favourite system you wish to see discussed here, get in touch. I'll give you the chance to show off your best game in the variation. Or maybe you have discovered a new move or idea? Again, send me your analysis or even better a game in which you have successfully used it. I look forward to hearing from you-subscribers and casual browsers are equally welcome.
