Slav Defence 3 Nc3 dxc4 4 e4 [D10]

Matlakov - Smeets: Maxim Matlakov crushed his opponent in a complex line:

but Black's play can certainly be improved.

Main Slav Classical approach 5...Bf5 6 e3 [D19]

Vachier Lagrave-Raznikov: Maxime Vachier Lagrave came up with a small innovation, 18. Qb3!?:

and comfortably outplayed his opponent. This game is rather instructive for those who want to learn how to play this popular line with the white pieces.

Marshall Gambit 9 Bc3 [D31]

Nakamura - Tomashevsky: Hikaru Nakamura chose a rare line of the Marshall Gambit with 9. Bc3 and 10. Qd6:

and Evgeny Tomashevsky failed to recall the right way, although he eventually held on thanks to White's inaccuracy.

QGD Tarrasch Defence 9 dxc5 [D34]

Navara - Swinkels: David Navara comfortably scored a full point in the Tarrasch Defence.

White's set-up recently becomes more and more popular so Black must certainly work out some precise defensive approach.

Moscow Variation 9...Bb7 10 0-0 [D43]

Van Wely-So: Wesley So cleverly exploited White's mistakes in a sharp line and easily got a full point.

Meran 8 Bd3 Bb7 9 a3 Bd6 [D47]

Sasikiran - Shirov: White's approach looked rather unimpressive but it was still a bit too hasty for Black to begin sharp complications in this position:

Yet White failed to find the correct path and after that Black was always on top in this exciting game.

QGD 5 Bg5 h6 6 Bxf6 Bxf6 [D57]

Salem - Giri: White came up with a recently fashionable early K-side assault, 9. h4:

but it eventually backfired.

Till next month, Ruslan
